Chapter 14, Problem 5DAA
Summary Introduction

To explain: How skin color of human populations correlate with the amount of UV radiation incident in their native regions.

Introduction: Different parts of the earth have variable exposure to UV radiations. The reflectance index is a measure of amount of light energy especially UV radiations absorbed by body per area unit. Melanosomes in skin synthesize melanin pigment and account for the human skin color. More melanin pigment provides protection against UV radiations and reflects less light.

Describe the relationship between melanin and UV light exposure in the human population. Include a description of both the effects of UV light on a person and function of melanin.
Consider the three types of human hair. Then, click and drag each label into the appropriate category. Labels → Drop Zones Reset All Male facial hair Terminal (1/3) Downy (2/3) Vellus (3/3) 90% of the hair on women Most of the hair on children except eyebrows, eyelashes, and scalp Armpit and pubic hair Eyebrows, eyelashes, and scalp Mostly found on a fetus Replaced by vellus Only 10% of hair on men
Skin Deep: Nina Jablonski's Theory of Race ANTH 101 Video Response Questions. What is melanin? Where is it produced in the body? Why do humans have melanin in their skin? When did racist ideas about different skin colors having different values get started? Who first invented these ideas? What did Nina Jablonski want to investigate regarding skin color in humans?  What different things affect the amount of ultraviolet light in the atmosphere? What did humans look like one and a half million years ago? What is the major cause of skin cancer? Why is folate important for humans? How does dark skin protect people in high UV environments? What is albinism? Why is vitamin D important to humans? Why did light colored skin evolve? Why do children have lighter skin than adults? How do Brazilians define their skin colors? How many human genes are involved in controlling the expression of skin color?
