Chapter 14, Problem 14.6YT
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

In the given MO diagram of benzene, each of the MOs is to be labeled as bonding, nonbonding, or antibonding. The degenerate orbitals pairs are also to be identified.

Concept introduction:

Relative to the p AO energies (a dotted vertical line in MO energy diagram), bonding MOs possess lower energy while antibonding MOs possess higher energy, and nonbonding MOs have exact energy to the corresponding AOs, so nonbonding orbitals are generally placed on the vertical line. This information is important in the identification of a given compound as aromatic or antiaromatic, identified by using Frost method. The orbitals with the same energy are called degenerate orbitals.

Please explain how to find the specific orbitals in which the lone pairs reside.
© Macmillan Leaming Consider two 2p orbitals, one on each of two different atoms, that are oriented side-to-side as in the figure. Imagine bringing these nuclei together so that overlap occurs as shown in the figure. This overlap results in a system of molecular orbitals. Construct an orbital interaction diagram for molecular orbital formation using the images that represent various orbital types (e.g., atomic, bonding, antibonding). Then, identify the number of nodes in each atomic and molecular orbital. Energy Select the number of nodes in the atomic orbital. Select the number of nodes in the bonding molecular orbital. Select the number of nodes in the antibonding molecular orbital. Arawer Bank 96
