To Find: The massof helium needed.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 36P

The mass of helium needed is 2.68kg

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Gauge pressure of the O2= 8.70atm

Gauge pressure of the He= 7.00atm

Formula used:

Ideal gas law Equation

  PV=nRTPn=RTVP1n1=P2n2n2=n1P2P1

Here, n1 is the number of moles for gas 1,

  P1 is the gauge pressure for gas 1,

  P2 is the gauge pressure for gas 2.

Calculation:

Oxygen and helium assume to be ideal gases. Means volume and temperature constant for both of them.

From ideal gas law

  PV=nRT

  Pn=RTV

  P1n1=P2n2

  n2=n1P2P1

  =(26.0kgO2)(1moleO232×103kg)(8.00atm)(9.70atm)=6.70×102moles

  =(6.70×102moles)(4.0×103kg1moleHe)=2.68kgHe

Conclusion:

The mass needed is 2.68 kg.
