Answer to Problem 6E

  a=0.012701b=0.017964s=0.0204

Explanation of Solution

In the question researchers examined how well does the number of beers a person drinks predict his or her blood alcohol content. Sixteen volunteers with an initial BAC of zero drank randomly assigned number of cans of beer. Least squared regression line was performed on the data. A residual plot and a histogram of the residual are shown in the question. The computer output is given for this data. α id the y -intercept which is also the estimate of the BAC level when zero beers have been drunk. The estimate of α is given in the column of “Coef” and in the row of “Constant”:

  a=0.012701

  β is the slope which means the estimate BAC level per beer drunk. The estimate of β is given in the column of “Coef” and in the row of “Beers”:

  b=0.017964

  σ is the standard deviation of the actual beers drunk about the population regression line. The estimate of σ is given is the output as S =:

  s=0.0204 .
