Chapter 12.1, Problem 13E

A certain genetic characteristic of a particular plant can appear in one of three forms (phenotypes).

A researcher has developed a theory, according to which the hypothesized proportions are p1 = 0.25, p2 = 0.50, and p3 = 0.25. A random sample of 200 plants yields X2 = 4.63.

  1. a. Carry out a test of the null hypothesis that the theory is correct, using level of significance α = 0.05.
  2. b. Suppose that a random sample of 300 plants had resulted in the same value of X2. How would the analysis and conclusion differ from those in Part (a)?

When Gregory Mendel conducted his famous hybridization experiments with peas, one such exper- iment resulted in offspring consisting of 428 peas with green pods and 152 peas with yellow pods. According to Mendel's theory, 1/4 of the offspring peas should have yellow pods. Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that the proportion of peas with yellow pods is equal to 1/4. (Hint: The null hypothesis needs equality.) State the hypothesis. Identify the appropriate test statistic formula to conduct the hypothesis test (do NOT calculate the test value).
