Chapter 12.2, Problem 26E

The paper “Credit Card Misuse, Money Attitudes, and Compulsive Buying Behavior: Comparison of Internal and External Locus of Control Consumers” (College Student Journal [2009]: 268–275) describes a study that surveyed a sample of college students at two midwestern public universities. Based on the survey responses, students were classified into two “locus of control” groups (internal and external) based on the extent to which they believe that they control what happens to them. Those in the internal locus of control group believe that they are usually in control of what happens to them, where-as those in the external locus of control group believe that it is usually factors outside their control that determines what happens to them. Each student was also classified according to a measure of compulsive buying.

The resulting data are summarized in the accompanying table. Can the researchers conclude that there is an association between locus of control and compulsive buying behavior? Carry out a X2 test using α = 0.01. Assume it is reasonable to regard the sample as representative of college students at midwestern public universities.

The University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study (HRS) surveys more than 22,000 Americans over the age of 50 every two years. A subsample of the HRS participated in an Internet-based survey that collected information on a number of topical areas, including health (physical and mental health behaviors), psychosocial items, economics (income, assets, expectations, and consumption), and retirement. Two of the questions asked were: "Would you say your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor?" and “Do you smoke cigarettes now?" Here is the two-way table that summarizes the answers on these two questions: Current smoker Нealth Yes No Excellent 25 484 Very good 115 1557 Good 145 1309 Fair 90 545 Рoor 29 11 This table gives the responses of a survey of 4310 Americans to questions about their health and whether they currently smoke cigarettes. As part of a long-term study of individuals 65 years of age or older, sociologists and physicians at the Wentworth Medical Center in upstate New York investigated the relationship between geographic location and depression. A sample of 60 individuals, all in reasonably good health, was selected; 20 individuals were residents of Florida, 20 were residents of New York, and 20 were residents of North Carolina. Each of the individuals sampled was given a standardized test to measure depression. Higher test scores indicate higher levels of depression. A second part of the study considered the relationship between geographic location and depression for individuals 65 years of age or older who had a chronic health condition such as arthritis, hypertension, and/or heart ailment. A sample of 60 individuals with such conditions was identified. Again, 20 were residents of Florida, 20 were residents of New York, and 20 were residents of North Carolina. Prepare a managerial report that summarizes…
According to the February 2008 Federal Trade Commission report on consumer fraud and identity theft, 23% of all complaints in the U.S. in 2007 were for identity theft. In that year, Alaska had 321 complaints of identity theft out of 1,432 consumers ("Consumer fraud and," 2008). Does this data provide  enough evidence to show that Alaska had a different proportion of identity theft than 23%? Test at 5% level.
