Concept explainers
Interpretation: Volume is calculated at varying pressures
Concept introduction: As per the Boyle’s law, the pressure and volume are inversely related, which means that as the pressure of the gas reduces, its volume increases and vice versa. Since, the product of pressure and volume of the gas always remains constant at a particular temperature and amount of gas. The equation gives the relation between pressure and volume is,
Given: At pressure of 760 mmHg, a sample of nitrogen (N2) has a volume of 50.0 L. Any change in the pressure, volume of nitrogen gas changed accordingly. We need to calculate the final volumes (in liters) on given pressures at constant amount and temperature.
a. 725 mmHg
b. 2.0 atm
c. 0.500 atm
d. 850 Torr

- A sample of CO2 gas at 22C and 1.00 atm has a volume of 2.00 L. Determine the ratio of the original volume to the final volume when (a) the pressure and amount of gas remain unchanged and the Celsius temperature is doubled. (b) the pressure and amount of gas remain unchanged and the Kelvin temperature is doubled.arrow_forwardA gas sample containing 1.50 moles at 25C exerts a pressure of 400. torr. Some gas is added to the same container and the temperature is increased to 50.C. If the pressure increases to 800. torr, how many moles of gas were added to the container? Assume a constant-volume container.arrow_forwardA collapsed balloon is filled with He to a volume of 12.5 L at a pressure of 1.00 atm. Oxygen, O2, is then added so that the final volume of the balloon is 26 L with a total pressure of 1.00 atm. The temperature, which remains constant throughout, is 21.5 C. (a) What mass of He does the balloon contain? (b) What is the final partial pressure of He in the balloon? (c) What is the partial pressure of O2 in the balloon? (d) What is the mole fraction of each gas?arrow_forward
