Volume Trade-Off Decisions
Barlow Company manufactures three products—A, B, d C. The selling price, variable costs, and contribution margin for one unit of each product follow:
The same raw material is used in all three products. Barlow Company has only 6000 pounds of raw material on hand and will not be able to obtain any more of it for several weeks due to a strike in its supplier’s plant. Management is trying to decide which product(s) to concentrate on next week in filling its backlog of orders. The material costs $8 per pound.
Required:
1. Calculate the contribution margin per pound of the constraining resource for each product
2. Assuming that Barlow has unlimited demand for each of its three products, What is the maximum contribution margin the company can earn when using the 6000 pounds of raw material on hand’
3. Assuming that Barlow’s estimated customer demand is 500 units per product line, What is the maximum contribution margin the company can earn When using the 6,000 pounds of raw material on band’
4. A foreign supplier could furnish Barlow the additional stocks of the raw material at a substantial premium over the usual price. Assuming Barlow’s estimated customer demand is 500 units per product line and that the company has used its 6,000 pounds of raw material in an optimal fashion, what is the highest price Barlow Company should be willing to pay for an additional pound of materials. Explain.

Introduction To Managerial Accounting
- Morris Industries manufactures and sells three products (AA, BB, and CC). The sales price and unit variable cost for the three products are as follows: Their sales mix s reflected as a ratio of 5:3:2. Annual fixed costs shared by the three products are $25,000 per year. What are total variable costs for Morris with their current product mix? Calculate the number of units of each product that will need to be sold in order for Morris to break even. What is their break-even point in sales dollars? Using an income statement format, prove that this is the break-even point.arrow_forwardAldovar Company produces a variety of chemicals. One division makes reagents for laboratories. The divisions projected income statement for the coming year is: Required: 1. Compute the contribution margin per unit, and calculate the break-even point in units. (Note: Round answer to the nearest unit.) Calculate the contribution margin ratio and use it to calculate the break-even sales revenue. (Note: Round contribution margin ratio to four decimal places, and round the break-even sales revenue to the nearest dollar.) 2. The divisional manager has decided to increase the advertising budget by 250,000. This will increase sales revenues by 1 million. By how much will operating income increase or decrease as a result of this action? 3. Suppose sales revenues exceed the estimated amount on the income statement by 1,500,000. Without preparing a new income statement, by how much are profits underestimated? 4. Compute the margin of safety based on the original income statement. 5. Compute the degree of operating leverage based on the original income statement. If sales revenues are 8% greater than expected, what is the percentage increase in operating income? (Note: Round operating leverage to two decimal places.)arrow_forwardMake-or-buy decision Somerset Computer Company has been purchasing carrying cases for its portable computers at a purchase price of 24 per unit. The company, which is currently operating below full capacity, charges factory overhead to production at the rate of 40% of direct labor cost. The unit costs to produce comparable carrying cases are expected to be as follows: If Somerset Computer Company manufactures the carrying cases, fixed factory overhead costs will not increase and variable factory overhead costs associated with the cases are expected to be 25% of the direct labor costs. a. Prepare a differential analysis dated April 30 to determine whether the company should make (Alternative 1) or buy (Alternative 2) the carrying case. b. On the basis of the data presented, would it be advisable to make the carrying cases or to continue buying them? Explain.arrow_forward
- Product decisions under bottlenecked operations Mill Metals Inc. has three grades of metal product, Type 5, Type 10, and Type 20. Financial data for the three grades are as follows: Mills operations require all three grades to be melted in a furnace before being formed. The furnace runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is a production bottleneck. The furnace hours required per unit of each product are as follows: The Marketing Department is considering a new marketing and sales campaign. Which product should be emphasized in the marketing and sales campaign in order to maximize profitability?arrow_forwardBethany Company has just completed the first month of producing a new product but has not yet shipped any of this product. The product incurred variable manufacturing costs of 5,000,000, fixed manufacturing costs of 2,000,000, variable marketing costs of 1,000,000, and fixed marketing costs of 3,000,000. Under the variable costing concept, the inventory value of the new product would be: a. 5,000,000. b. 6,000,000. c. 8,000,000. d. 11,000,000.arrow_forwardOat Treats manufactures various types of cereal bars featuring oats. Simmons Cereal Company has approached Oat Treats with a proposal to sell the company its top selling oat cereal bar at a price of $27,500 for 20,000 bars. The costs shown are associated with production of 20,000 oat bars currently. The manufacturing overhead consists of $3,000 of variable costs with the balance being allocated to fixed costs. Should Oat Treats make or buy the oat bars?arrow_forward
- Special Order Decisions Polaski Company manufactures and sells a single product called a Ret. Operating at capacity, the company can produce and sell 30,000 Rets per year. Costs associated with this level of production and sales are given below: The Rets normally sell for $50 each. Fixed manufacturing overhead is $270,000 per year within the range of 25,000 through 30,000 Rets per year. Required: 1. Assume that due to a recession, Polaski Company expects to sell only 25,000 Rets through regular channels next year. A large retail chain has offered to purchase 5,000 Rets if Polaski is willing to accept a 16% discount off the regular price. There would be no sales commissions on this order; thus, variable selling expenses would be slashed by 75%. However, Polaski Company would have to purchase a special machine to engrave the retail chain’s name on the 5,000 units. This machine would cost $10,000. Polaski Company has no assurance that the retail chain will purchase additional units in the…arrow_forwardProduct Decisions Under Bottlenecked Operations Youngstown Glass Company manufactures three types of safety plate glass: large, medium, and small. Manufacturing and selling the product required $525,000 of fixed costs. Its per unit variable costs follow. Direct materials i Direct labor Variable overhead costs Variable selling and administrative costs For the next year, management will use a new material, which will reduce direct materials costs to $4.50 per unit and reduce direct labor costs to $2 per unit. Sales, total fixed costs, variable overhead costs per unit, and variable selling and administrative costs per unit will not change Management is also considering raising its selling price to $30 per unit. which would decrease unit sales volume to 36,000 units. 2.
