Explanation of Solution

Given:

Mass of guitar string m = 3.6 g = 0.0036kg

Length of the guitar string  l = 90 cm = 0.90 m

Tension in the string T = 520 N

Distance from bridge to support post L = 62 cm = 0.62 m

Formula used:

Speed of the wave on string is calculated by following formula,

  v = T(mL) 

Here,

  T is string tension,

  m is string mass,

  L is string length.

The fundamental frequency of string with both end fixed is calculated by following formula,

  fn = n×v2×L

Here fn is the frequency of n1 overtone,

  v is speed of wave,

  l is the length of vibrating string.

  n = no. of fixed end - 1 .

Calculation:

Substitute the given values in the above equation,

  fn = n 2×L×T(ml)fn = 1 2×0.62×520(0.00360.9)fn = 290.77 Hz

Frequency of first overtone is calculated by following way,

  f2 = 2×f1= 2×290.77 = 581.54 Hz

Frequency of second overtone is calculated by following way,

  f3 = 3×f1= 3×290.77 = 872.31 Hz

Thus, the fundamental frequency is 290.77 Hz and frequency of first two overtones are 581.54 Hz and 871.31 Hz respectively.
