Chapter 10.4, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To explain: A large number of ATP and NADPH molecules are used during the Calvin cycle with a high value of glucose.

Introduction:

The plant cell is able to construct carbohydrate molecules for its own use once it has turned the energy from the sun into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). Carbon dioxide, a gas exhaled by animals and humans with every breath, provides the carbon atoms needed to construct carbohydrate molecules in plants. During photosynthesis, the energy produced by the light-dependent processes is used in a series of events known as the Calvin cycle to produce glucose and other carbohydrate molecules.

Students have asked these similar questions
How are the large numbers of ATP and NADPH molecules used during the Calvin cycle consistent with the high value of glucose as an energy source?
A decrease in entropy occurs during the CO2 uptake phase of the Calvin cycle, as freely moving CO2 molecules become fixed into a carbon skeleton. How can this occur without direct participation by NADPH and/or ATP?
What are the stages of the Calvin-Benson cycle? Select all that apply.     The resulting unstable six-carbon molecule splits into two three-carbon molecules of PGA.   ATP and NADPH are used to convert PGA molecules to PGAL.   Most of the PGAL is used to regenerate RuBP, but some is exported to the cytoplasm to produce carbohydrates.   Rubisco attaches CO2 to a five-carbon organic compound called RuBP.   Rubisco is used to convert PGA molecules to PGAL.
