DEXAMETHASONE THERAPY AND IQ
On page 439, we presented cognition data obtained by researchers studying the effects of early postnatal dexamethasone therapy for the prevention or treatment of chronic lung disease of prematurity. The study included 146 school-age children of which 72 had been in a dexamethasone group and 74 had been in a control group. As infants, all of the children in both groups had severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) due to insufficiently developed lungs.
To measure cognition, the researchers employed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. Third Edition (WISC-III). Use the data in the table to perform the following statistical inferences for each of the three WISC-III main scales and each of the four WISC-III subscales. So, you will need do parts (a)and(b) seven times.
- a. At the 5% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that a difference exists between
mean scores of school-age children who as (premature) infants receive dexamethasone therapy and those who do not? - b. Determine and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the difference between mean scores of school-age children who as (premature) infants do not receive dexamethasone therapy and those who do.
- c. Discuss your results in detail.

- What is an experiment?arrow_forwardThe data in the attached image represents blood pressure based on a new trial medication used in an experiment involving a total of 50 male and female subjects. There were two levels of treatment: 0 = placebo and 1 = treatment group. Family History Blood Pressure = Fam-Hist-BP; from the paternal side = PS; from the maternal side = MS; from both sides = BS; none on both sides or not known = N.; Blood pressure before the experiment = BP-Before-Exp; Blood pressure after the experiment = BP-After-Exp. Task: Generate at least two different cross tabulations.arrow_forwardA study examined the relationship between a nurse's assessment of a patient's facial expression and his or her self-reported level of pain. Data for 89 patients are summarized below: Self-Report Facial Expression No Pain Pain No Pain 17 40 Pain 3 29 We'd like to determine if there is evidence of an association between a facial expression that reflects pain and self-report pain, because dementia patients do not always give a verbal indication that they are in pain. By using SPSS or Minitab, design the appropriate test and generate the data analyses. Relate the results of the test to the research question and conclude the findings.arrow_forward
