Concept Introduction:
The boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of that substance becomes equal to the surrounding pressure. At the boiling point, the substance changes its state from liquid to vapour. The boiling point depends on the intermolecular forces present between the molecules of the liquid. The more the intermolecular forces present, the higher is the boiling point of the liquid. There are three types of intermolecular force present in liquid; named as: (a) London dispersion force (b) dipole-dipole force, and (c) hydrogen bonding force. The molecule which can form two hydrogen bonds simultaneously will have a very high boiling point.

EBK INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY
- The vapor pressure of ethanol, C2H5OH, at 50.0 C is 233 mmHg, and its normal boiling point at 1 atm is 78.3 C. Calculate the vapH of ethanol.arrow_forward8.51 Suppose that three unknown pure substances are liquids at room temperature. You determine that the boiling point of substance A is 53°C, that of substance B is 117°C, and that of substance C is 77°C. Based on this information, rank the three substances in order of their vapor pressures at room temperature.arrow_forwardThe compounds ethanol (C2H5OH) and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) have the same molecular formula. Which is expected to have the higher surface tension? Why?arrow_forward
- Diethyl ether (CH3CH2OCH2CH3) was one of the first chemicals used as an anesthetic. At 34.6C, diethyl ether has a vapor pressure of 760. torr, and at 17.9C, it has a vapor pressure of 400. torr. What is the H of vaporization for diethyl ether?arrow_forwardSilane SiH4, phosphine (PH3), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) melt at 185 C, 133 C, and 85 C, respectively. What does this suggest about the polar character and intermolecular attractions of the three compounds?arrow_forwardArrange the following substances in order of increasing strength of the crystal forces: He, NH3, NO2, NaBr, BaO. Identify the kinds of forces that are most important in holding the particles together in a crystalline solid sample of each of the following substances. (a) H2O (b) C6H6 (c) CaCl2 (d) SiO2 (e) Fearrow_forward
- The CsCl structure is a simple cubic array of chloride ions with a cesium ion at the center of each cubic array (see Exercise 69). Given that the density of cesium chloride is 3.97 g/cm3, and assuming that the chloride and cesium ions touch along the body diagonal of the cubic unit cell, calculate the distance between the centers of adjacent Cs+ and Cl ions in the solid. Compare this value with the expected distance based on the sizes of the ions. The ionic radius of Cs+ is 169 pm, and the ionic radius of Cl is 181 pm.arrow_forward8.48 Why must the vapor pressure of a substance be measured only after dynamic equilibrium is established?arrow_forward
