Meiosis is a process in which a single cell divides twice to produce four cells with half the amount of genetic material as the original cell. These cells are our sperm and eggs, respectively, in males and females. 

One cell divides twice during meiosis to produce four daughter cells. 

These four daughter cells are haploid, meaning they have half the amount of chromosomes as the parent cell. 

Meiosis is the process through which human sex cells, or gametes, are created (eggs in females and sperm in males). 

There are nine phases in the process of meiosis. Between the first time the cell divides (meiosis I) and the second time it divides (meiosis II).
