Question
Calculate the mass of a liquid with a density of 3.2 g/mL and a volume of 25 mL
Expert Solution
Step 1

The amount of matter present in a substance is defined as its mass. It is independent of its location and the gravitational force applied to it. The mass of a substance is constant at all times whereas the weight depends on the gravity acting on it. When one compares one's mass on the earth and moon, it remains the same while the weight on the moon is one-sixth the weight on the earth. Density measures how densely the matter is packed in a substance. Liquids have intermediate densities when compared to solids and gases and the density of liquids is independent of the pressure but are dependent on the temperature. Knowing about the densities of two substances helps in their separation and also determines whether the substance will float or not. Volume is defined as the space occupied by a particular substance. The volume of a liquid is measured using graduated cylinders, beakers, etc. Graduated cylinders are used for measuring small amounts of liquid while beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks are used to measure higher volumes of liquid. When liquids are poured into these measuring apparatus they form a curved shape known as meniscus which is used to measure the volume of the liquid.
