13. How would ATP production in an aerobic yeast culture change if we add the following metabolites or chemicals to the cultivation media? Explain why in each case by citing which enzyme(s) or process(es) would be affected.
Aerobic yeast culture is a metabolic process in which glucose is metabolize by fermentation even in the presence of oxygen and it occurs through the repression of normal respiratory metabolism. It is named as the Crabtree effect in yeast. Thus, yeast undergoes both aerobic (i.e. in the presence of oxygen, yeasts can undergo krebs cycle and ETC and eventually ATP synthesis occurs) and anerobic metabolism (i.e. in the absence of oxygen, yeasts can undergoes fermentation and convert carbohydrates into carbon dioxide and ethanol).
Oxidative phosphorylation - is the process of ATP synthesis that is coupled to the movement of electrons (by NADH/FADH2) and proton pumping via the mitochondrial electron transport chain. It is the associated with consumption of oxygen and release of a water molecule.
