There are numerous reasons why I would like to participate in this program. My first reason is that I hope to become better prepared for entering a graduate school program in philosophy. I am passionate about philosophy and my dream is to become a philosophy professor so I can share this passion with others. My college's philosophy department has limited resources, and I hope that this opportunity will help me to close any gaps in my knowledge regarding the graduate school admissions process.
My second reason for wanting to participate in this program is that I look forward to meeting other people my age who are as passionate about philosophy as I am. Currently, I am one of two philosophy majors at my college. The promise of connecting with
First of all, this program gives me an opportunity to meet other students from Japan. I think learning and living with people from different cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds can definitely be a very unique experience for students. And I would like to be one of those lucky students. Moreover, this program can definitely change my tiny world to bigger world. I think
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, many of the book’s characters show courage. Courage is shown when a character stands up for their beliefs, even when they face heavy opposition. They decide to fight even when they know they will most likely lose, or even if they are the only one fighting. Courage is standing up for one’s beliefs, even if it means standing alone against the whole world. Three characters who show courage are Mrs. Dubose, Atticus Finch, and Arthur “Boo” Radley.
This is a great academy for me because it will help know what courses I would like to do and I will learn so much from and there are many reasons why I should be chosen for this academy. Also I feel like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and this has a lot of advantages and It will benefit me a lot.
Adults and peers have described me as dependable, fair, honest, trustworthy, intelligent, empathetic, respectful, and friendly and I do my best to live by these characteristics. One of my main mottos is to treat others the way you want to be treated. I am by no means a perfect person and I try to accept help and criticism whenever it is offered in an effort to keep improving upon my character. I am a reliable student, sister, daughter, and friend. I believe I would learn a lot from being a member of this program because being surrounded by peers with similar moral and academic character would allow me to do even more to make my community a better place. This would be a perfect opportunity to benefit from any experiences this program has to offer me and make a positive impact on my school and
A program that is oriented around illuminating the complex problems that surround our world on a daily basis really connects to what I hope to receive in my college experience. This program incorporates progressive ways of teaching principal
The Governor’s Honors Program has been a dream of mine ever since by brother, Dammy, went there. He would talk about it constantly while I listened intensively. Dammy spoke of the classes he had for technology, his roommate, and the fun classes and activities he got to do after he finished classes. He told me about the time he went swimming and the gym class he had. Dammy also spoke about the new people he met, his PA, and how much fun they had. His words encouraged me to try and make it to GHP. He has always been my role model and I try to follow in his footsteps, especially when he talks about the activity with excitement.
In December 2014, The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education published “Rethinking the Admission Process.” This article was written by Frank DiMaria, who takes a look at the research of the former president of the University of Wyoming, Robert Sternberg. DiMaria explains Sternberg’s stance against the current admissions process. Sternberg has research that depicts, “GPA, standardized tests, and essays do not successfully measure the true talent of a college applicant.” He believes that the policies need to change. Sternberg offers an alternative to the current process. Sternberg has been a part of a new admissions policy testing students not just on their memorization and analytical skills, but on their creative, practical, and wisdom-based skills as well. Sternberg’s ideas stem from his experience with disadvantaged youth and their ability to adapt and overcome obstacles. Sternberg claims that students who grow up in the upper middle class tend to have an environment which better values the analytical skills that the current tests measure. He argues that, because of this, colleges may not be getting the most creative and adaptable students. He shows that some of these less privileged students are capable of handling a college workload even though they may not have been able to score as high on the SAT or other tests. DiMaria believes that through Sternberg’s Kaleidoscope policy may be a solution. The Kaleidoscope way of admissions administers tests which ask open ended
I would like to be selected to serve as an LSAMP Scholar because it is a community that understands the struggles that minority groups face. It is a community that works to improve any weak areas or any weak mentalities. The programmatic requirements are there to supplement the education I am receiving and to build my character, confidence, and intelligence. I am one who would utilize the resources given to me and I am one who is consistent with my actions. I am one who is open to any type of development, support service that will allow me to better myself. I am one who already utilizes many of support services required in the LSAMP Program, such as REACH tutoring and
The reason as to why I am applying for this summer program is because of the opportunity that it provides. Programs such as these gives the unique opportunity to explore multiple different career paths. But, not only does it provide a learning opportunity, it also allows a cultural one. Being able to travel and live in a foreign country at such a young age is one of the most memorable and amazing things that you can do. I believe that if accepted into this program, that I will do my very best to prove myself dedicated as a student because I want to spend my life learning and preparing myself for the real world as a careered woman. I have not yet solidified what I would like to be in the future, but as of this moment, I hope to possibly become
I was enticed by the idea of incorporating subjects which I am interested in into my regular core classes such as hypothetical cases and the ethics of law. Moreover, I would very much appreciate the opportunity to develop my oratorical skills. I saw the poise with which the students at the open house spoke, and I admired
If someone asked me where I am going to be in ten years, this would be my answer. I will have a great, high-paying job, and beautiful wife and family, and a nice sports car parked in front of my lovely house. When I look into the future, I see myself being successful and happy. Even though I always pictured myself this way, I never worried too much about how I would get there. I feel the Suffolk University can lay the groundwork for making these dreams into reality.
Eeyore, a male donkey, is a character from one of my favorite children’s books called Winnie-the-Pooh, created by a man named A.A. Milne. Eeyore is characterized by his sad, negative gestures and gloomy appearance. He is grey and has a tale with a pink bow on the end that is connected by a drawing pin. He has poor opinions and thinks he is mostly wrong, he never seems to smile, and also expects bad things to happen to him. Eeyore lives in a forest called Hundred Acre Wood along with his other animal friends; Pooh Bear, Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger, Owl, Kanga, and Roo. Christopher Robin is the little boy that can talk to all of these animals. A.A. Milne created these characters based on his son, Christopher Robin Milne, stuffed toys.
The reason I am interested in this program is because I want to have real experiences. I no longer want to look at life through a computer screen. I want to be the one researching and challenging myself in every possible way. I am a very open-minded and ambitious person. I am prepared to tackle any task that comes my way. I have little outdoor experience, but I want nothing more than to learn. Adventures are the best way of learning so this position was naturally appealing to me. This program will give me the opportunity to apply what I learned in class to the real world and allow me to escape the ordinary. I am a freshman in college with a massive desire for learning. I wish to leave my own trail and be the ripple in a wave that will produce
People in the past did not stress value of receiving a higher education because it was not as indispensable as it is today. Now, people perceive others not only by their appearances, but by their accomplishments. Employers always hire people with the most education and experience. The majority of students are concerned about getting a higher education throughout the years. Nevertheless, some people question the purposes of getting educated, and consider it meaningless. The concept of education has a significant meaning. It enables one to take control of knowledge and apply it. It is education what prepares the mind to comprehend and learn important ideas. A higher education is very important for an individual's success in
“As a source of energy, nothing matches the sun…. Only a small fraction of the sun’s power output strikes the Earth, but even that provides 10,000 times as much as all the commercial energy that humans use on the planet” ("Make Solar Energy Economical"). This is good evidence that investing in solar energy can be valuable because not only is it clean and renewable, but it is also plentiful. This makes solar energy better option then the use of fossil fuel, however there are a couple of challenges with solar energy that must first be overcome before even thinking about cutting fossil fuels. For example, while solar panels do create energy from the sun, they are not very efficient. Most of today’s “commercial panels” only capture 10 to 20 percent or the sun’s energy which means the cost of solar energy is 3 to 6 times more expensive then what we currently use (qtd. in DOE). Additionally, the the solar panels can be costly to manufacture because the materials used need to be of high purity so it does not interfere with the flow of the electrical charge. One also needs to consider that while the solar panels can create energy when the sun is out, this is not the case during the night or when it is cloudy/stormy. Therefore, storage of this power is very important because it would enable people to always have power. So, solar energy is quite promising and with improvement it has the ability to replace fossil fuels which is one of the grand challenges for engineers.
