Self sacrifice not only helps those directly affected, but also serves as a powerful symbol that makes a difference in the world. One man who put his life before others selflessly was Rick Rescorla. A retired US Army officer, he worked at the World Trade center as a director of security before and during the attacks of September 11th. He had always suspected that the World Trade center could be a potential target for terrorists. So, on the day of the attack, Rescorla was instrumental in helping those in the building to escape. Ignoring a PA announcement that ordered everyone to stay at their desks, Rescorla ordered everyone to escape through the staircases in a calm manner. His wife, Susan, who was watching the news at home, called him frantically.

People walked through the city of New York as they would on any ordinary day, except fate had a different course of action planned out for America. Being only 5 I can still remember that chaos and frightfulness that swept over America due to an act of terror. On September 11, 2001 the country faced an attack that exemplified the most evil of acts. At 8:46 a.m. a hijacked airplane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Shortly after another plane lunged into the South Tower immediately causing the building to be engulfed in flames. Thousands of people were in these buildings doing anything they could to escape. Burning bodies could be seen jumping from the top flights of the towers. Firefighters and policemen became heroes as they put their lives to the side so that they could bring those trapped in the burning buildings to safety. During all of this a third plane crashed into the Pentagon and for the first time in history all aircrafts were to land at the nearest airport. Approximately an hour after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center, they both collapsed along with the innocent lives of those who were trapped inside. Ash and debris filled the city and those fortunate enough to escape. 2,753 people were killed in the collapse of the towers on one of Americas most deadly attacks to date. Not only did this attack take away thousands of lives and break the hearts of families across the country, it instilled a sense of fear and concern for the safety of being an American. The people were in need of a sense of direction to take following one of the Nation’s most tragic measures. After the three attacks it left everyone angry and confused to what was going on. They needed a sense of reassurance so that they knew the country was taking action swiftly and taking the precautionary measures to make sure nothing of this nature could happen on American soil again. He effectively displays kairos, logos, ethos, and pathos to get his message to transpire to America. President George Bush used this event to fuel a speech addressed to the nation that would define his presidency for years to come. How did George Bush’s speech help Americans come
September 11, 2001 is a day that will forever be remembered by all Americans; it was the day in which 2,823 people were killed due to the terrorist attacks performed by the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. Up to this day there are many people who do not know all the facts about this day and do not even know the number of plane crashes that occurred due to Al-Qaeda’s terrorist plans. Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization that was started by Osama Bin Laden. This terrorist group is a racist organization whose philosophy is described as centralization of decision and decentralization of execution. This group has admitted they are responsible for the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They stated that the United States was actively oppressing and
Fourteen years ago, our country appeared to come to a halt at 8:46 am. As the first hijacked plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center, Americans were filled with fear and melancholy. And as they held their breath, awaiting some sense of hope, you did what most people could never imagine doing. You went into the buildings while people were going out, holding your own, in the midst of the immense heat and disintegrating steel.
If there is one day I dread most upon its arrival, it would be 9/11. Sure there was an immense amount of strength as a nation represented, following the terrorists attacks, but it also brought a great amount of grief and sorrow. I remember watching videos of innocent people jumping from windows in the twin towers hoping to escape the terror. These people believed there was no one to help and no one to help them. They lost hope. In “Remembering a Hero, 15 Years After 9/11” written by Peggy Noonan, published in The Wall Street Journal on September 11th 2016, Alison Crowther—Welles Crowther’s mom—recalls the courageous actions to save the lives of others, made by her son on this horrific day. Noonan utilizes pathos, ethos, asyndeton, and
The 9/11 memorial, on the site of twin towers tragedy is a greatly build memorial. My visit there 2 weeks ago was heart warming experience. The memorial was one of the most beautiful tributes t had ever seen. The water splashing against your skin brings a sense of peacefulness and somberness. It will always remain ground zero in my mind.
The Dead of September 11 is deep poem that provokes many feelings and thoughts. There are many topics that are rather easy to delve in to. Throughout this essay, three of these literary techniques will be addressed and “delved into”, so to speak. These techniques are: diction, figurative language and tone. Throughout the following essay several large ideas and the theme of this poem will also be addressed, including but not limited to the universality of the poem and the absolute obliteration of falsities and of false intimacy. Tony Morrison has created a complex, captivating piece of literary art that can be viewed and be interpreted in many different ways, with each individual person who examines it
When a loved one dies, it feels like the end of your world. No apology could fix it. However, I believe that even the most sincere acts of sympathy and grief towards the victim(s) would show more respect than trying to put a price value on those who suffered. Amanda Ripley, author of WTC Victims: What’s A Life Worth?, writes about what the government planned to do to compensate for family losses. According to the article, Kenneth Feinberg, who is responsible for dispersing money to the ones that were increasingly affected by the attacks, without shame went into detail of how one can figure out how much the government is willing to pay. In the end, most people’s total compensation were either near or at zero. Many family members were appalled and a woman by the name of Maureen Halvorson even said,“I just can't accept the fact that the Federal Government is saying my husband and my brother are worth nothing.” It would have been more gratifying to those experiencing mass grief if the government simply sent out messages of deep condolence rather than try to put a zero next to the victim’s name.
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” -Albert Einstein. Life should be viewed as a positive because everyone is only given one lifetime to do what they would like to. Although few people interpret life as a positive aspect such as Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, there is also other ways people see the value of life. Including Hamlet from William Shakespeare’s book Hamlet, he views life as a complication, and Amanda Ripley, who views life in a financial point of view. When faced with the perspective of life, many people see the value of life in a black or white manner but there is also a financial perspective as well. All of these views offer an interesting perspective regarding the value of life.
Following the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing, Rescorla invited Hill to New York, where he hired him as a security consultant in order to assess the building 's security. Although no arrests had yet been made, Rescorla believed that the bomb had been planted by Muslims. Hill went undercover in several mosques throughout New Jersey, showing up for morning prayers at dawn. He took on the character of an anti-American Muslim, in order to interview the other visitors to the mosques. He concluded that the attack was likely planned by a radical imam at a mosque in New York or New Jersey. Followers of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, a radical Muslim cleric based in Brooklyn, were subsequently convicted of the bombing.
On September 11th, 2001 tragedy struck, when two planes flew into the World Trade Center, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, and a plane that crashed down in Pennsylvania. These horrific acts of terrorism changed America into what it is today. It changed the way people thought about others and how equal the American people really are. The United States was in a panic and was ready to accuse others immediately. The Crucible showed us that a shocking, confusing event can make people almost go insane with fear. Many are willing to risk others lives to get their points across. This is when hysteria hit the town of Salem and later the United States. Hysteria is an exaggerated, uncontrollable emotion that usually specializes in a group of people. Like Salem people were accused and unjustifiably punished. The attack on the world trade center affected how many live their lives today both mentally and physically. Opinions like,“9/11 lead to mass hysteria because it was a horrible, sudden tragedy that many people did not see coming”(Maravilla,Perez,Avina, Pg 1). The long term effects of this incident were unnerving. The leaders of this society had to change how they protected this country and had to alter their immediate opinions of a certain people, in fact most people had to as well. The cause of the hysteria was just after the events occurred when the air became thick with worry and uneasiness. This tragic historical event caused several hundreds to live in fear for what “might be
Heroes rise and act in times of need, even if obstacles may stand in the way. For instance, Frederick Douglass an abolitionist, and Vincent Ardolino, a man who rescued others at the BOATLIFT of 9-11 both acted to help during a time when heroes were needed even though obstacles stood in their way. Frederick Douglas’ feelings towards rising and speaking against slavery are described in his autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Douglass stated, “ The truth was I felt myself a slave, and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down.” Frederick, although he felt unworthy, stood that day and spoke as a symbol against slavery. Frederick Douglas’ actions led him to be “engaged in pleading the cause of my brethren” from then on, and to be seen as a hero until today. Likewise, Vincent Ardolino is a man who acted when he saw others in need to be rescued off the island during the chaos of 9-11.
Perhaps the most recognized terrorist attack on the United States was the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2011. The horrific events that unfolded as a result of these attacks will never be forgotten as well as the lessons learned by first responders. Tens of thousands of people were involved in rescue, recovery and clean-up work following the 9/11 World Trade Center (WTC) terrorist attacks. The diverse group of people who responded to this disaster included traditional first responders such as police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians, along with non-traditional responders such as construction workers, operating engineers and other volunteers, most of whom had no prior training in
The central issue in this case is the impact that informal groups can have on public administration. On September 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists, over 3000 people lost their lives. There was, and still is, no doubt that this event reached throughout America and touched each one of us. We can all remember where we were and what we were doing the very moment we found out about it. This case expressed the issues that many people had concerning what to do in the aftermath of this disaster, especially New York firefighters. They lost 343 of their colleagues and were determined not to leave any of them behind. It reminded me of the
