In this report I will talk about four different ways of communicating, the four different communication styles are written communication, non verbal, verbal and computerized. Communication is something that everyone does without even thinking. Communication is giving information either verbally or written and the person receiving and obtaining the information. Verbal communication is used in a health care to really communicate and build strong relationships with staff and patients. Verbal communication can be formal and informal depending on your relationship with the patient, such as when speaking to a patient you will have a formal way of communicating with them. If you were speaking to an old friend you would speak in an informal manner. If you were going for a job interview you would be very formal in the way you speak. Verbal communication can have many positive and negative effects. Having verbal communication with patients can help them understand and connect with their doctor or nurse. It can also give the patient a chance to ask any questions or queries they may have. These conversations can be done in private and is one of the quickest ways of giving information immediately. When having verbal conversation there is no proof of the conversation so all information should be written down. This form of communication is developing every day with new inventions and ideas that are created to try and make things easier and more efficient for patients and staff. This communication is very important in the health care field. Using technology and internet can be a big help it is a quick and easy way to transfer information about patients to other doctors or staff. There can be issues with sending private information and files over the internet such as the chance that information can get into the wrong hands. If that happens then the patients’ privacy has been breached. When using email always use formal wording and never use slang, it is unprofessional and it can be misinterpreted. You also have to make sure you use this form of communication in the correct way e.g. you would not email one of your patients to let them know they are terminally ill as this would be the wrong type of communication and very unprofessional. In this report I have explained the importance of effective communication. The four methods that I have discussed are written communication, non verbal, verbal and computerized. From this report it has allowed me to understand how important effective communication is within health care and that if the correct communication is not given it can really have disastrous effects on patients in many
Communication, according to the Free Dictionary, is “the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing or behaviors”. It is vital in the development and maintenance of personal and professional relationships. It is important to understand communication also includes non-verbal as well as verbal acts. According to Rane (2010), 93% of communication is nonverbal and body language is an effective nonverbal communication tool. Communication is much more than just talking; it the means of getting the message across through obtaining information, giving information, ideas shared, opinions and views. (buzzle.com, 2010)However it is important to have a good communication between service users and the service providers which then helps to build a good relationship. The word professional get thrown around left and right, written on every application mentioned by every professor, employer, and business. It has gotten to point where the word is spoken but barely ever defined. Within a health care setting communication is a necessity. This communication not only includes the need for professional communication but also the way in which information is shared to the patient and to other healthcare workers. Another important aspect of health care worker such as a nurse is the effectiveness off a handover. Within the video, Effective Communication in nursing these three aspects of communication (Professional communication, provision of information and handover) were seen and will be analysed further, within this essay. These will be analysed through the three aspects, the care of the patient, the image of the individual nurse and the health outcomes of the patient. All of these three aspects of communication are vitally important to the overall patient needs.
Communication is any form of expressing and receiving of messages between individuals. The importance of Communication in the nursing profession is to maintain high quality care for the patient but also maintain effective collaboration between professionals. Boykins, D (2014) states that the “registered nurse is expected to communicate in various formats and in all areas of practice”. The health care practitioner always should use appropriate language when they are working with service users and their families, colleagues. Professional Communication is a very important element in the foundation for a strong health care system. Communication can also serve as a basis for basic health care administered. Communication is not only the one tool in health care in which we can control, but also what helps prevent the derailment in patient-healthcare professional trust.. Types of model that can help express how important professional communication is within health care is the movie titled, The Doctor. There are various examples in this movie in which the importance of professional communication is portrayed and supports the argument, as well. These types of examples and supporting data can also be found in real life testimonies of what type of situations can result from lack of professional communication in the health care setting. Communication teaches the importance in human-to-human contact that some hospitals and health care setting may lack due to the certain personality type that is more attracted to the roles of doctors. Professional communication should remain at the forefront of bed side manner and proper etiquette in the health care field and setting.
Communication involves information being sent, received and decoded between two or more people (Balzer-Riley 2008) and involves the use of a number of communication skills; which in a nursing context generally focuses on listening and giving information to patients (Weller 2002). This process of sending and receiving messages has been described as both simple and complex (Rosengren 2000 in McCabe 2006, p.4). It is a process which is continually utilised by nurses to convey and receive information from the patient, co-workers, others they come into contact with and the patient’s family.

The ‘Communication cycle’ is a frequently used theory of communication. It was originally established by Charles Berners in 1965. In 1967, a man named Michael Argyle claimed that human communication is essentially a two-way process that involves people sending, and responding to each other’s verbal and non-verbal messages. It was then improved in 1972 by Argyle’s. The model of the ‘communication cycle’ makes it apparent that to ensure effective communication, it has to be a two-way process. As well as transmitting messages to others in a precise way, health care professions must be able to react to both verbal and non-verbal feedback. Therefore, operational communication has to involve determination from both sides in the communication cycle.
Problems with verbal communication in the healthcare setting emerge from the fact that nurses and others in the healthcare setting receive little education on how to communicate effectively with each other.
Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
