This assignment will start by discussing two well-known theories known as ‘the cycle of communication’ by Michael Argyle and ‘the stages of communication’ by Bruce Tuckman. Firstly, it will look at Michael Argyle’s ‘The cycle of communication’.
The ‘Communication cycle’ is a frequently used theory of communication. It was originally established by Charles Berners in 1965. In 1967, a man named Michael Argyle claimed that human communication is essentially a two-way process that involves people sending, and responding to each other’s verbal and non-verbal messages. It was then improved in 1972 by Argyle’s. The model of the ‘communication cycle’ makes it apparent that to ensure effective communication, it has to be a two-way process. As well as transmitting messages to others in a precise way, health care professions must be able to react to both verbal and non-verbal feedback. Therefore, operational communication has to involve determination from both sides in the communication cycle.
The ‘communication cycle’ has six stages.
Stage one is when an idea occurs. This means that the sender has to think and assess the circumstances that they are placed in before they start to communicate. The sender transmitting the message needs to think about what and how they are trying to say the message. For example, in a doctor’s surgery, an idea will occur as the practitioner thinks about how he/she will communicate with the current patient. This allows him to communicate more

The sending of the message is known as ‘encoding’, at this stage the communicator is planning what needs to be said, this stage is very effective as it can help conversations to be delivered in an effective way, for example; if a doctor needs to tell his patient that they have cancer, he should plan his words or expressions very carefully so not to hurt the patient or make them feel worse than they are.
Communication is a process of transferring information from one person or from a group of people to the other. Communication can also be defined as a way and form of passing or receiving a message. People communicate to express or share a concern and allow the passing of message. By not communicating can limit the people’s ability to connect with each other. People communicate so that they can understand the needs of others and it ensures ways of building trust and resolving conflicts. The importance of Communication in the nursing profession is to maintain high quality care for the patient but also maintain effective collaboration between professionals. Boykins, D (2014) states that the “registered nurse is expected to communicate in various formats and in all areas of practice”. So now on to the six steps that make up the communication cycle. The first step of the six is when an idea occurs. This is when the sender of the message has to think about something that they may want to communicate about. For example, if it was in a health and social care setting, for example at a doctor’s surgery the GP will think of how he is able to communicate with his patients and this will make it more efficient for him. The second step of the communication cycle is when the message gets coded. You would then send the message, so you would send the picture or writing to someone telling them that you want to buy a laptop. Then the message would be received, this would be when the other person has gotten your message. Then the message would be decoded, this is where the person would take what has been said to them and try to decode it. This

Effective communication is more than simply sharing information. It is important to understand the true meaning and emotion behind the expressed information, and this can often become quite difficult when the subjectivity and complexity of nonverbal cues gets thrown into the mix. Throughout this paper, the meaning of communication and its application to group and team functioning will be explored, as well as the powerful impact it has in the health care setting. Effective communication amongst members of the health care team promotes teamwork and possessing an experienced and competent set of communication skills as a nurse is absolutely critical in providing safe, therapeutic and reliable care to patients.
