Introduction:
Carl Linnaeus is known as “Father of modern taxonomy”. Taxonomy involves the naming of an organism while the classification deals with the determination of evolutionary relationships among the organisms that share a common ancestor. The classification of an organism is done by placing it in an order from the broadest domain and kingdom to the most specific by genus and species. The hierarchical groups between these domains and species include phylum, class, family, and the order. In a binomial system of nomenclature, genus is the Generic name while specific epithet is the species name.

- Name the ship on which darwin was appointed as a naturalist.arrow_forwardIdentify what is being described by each of the following statements. Write your best answer on the blank provided before the item. 1) Figure 20 shows that the European otter (Lutra lutra) and the American badger (Taxidea taxus) belong to the same group through a common ancestor. In cladistics, what is such a grouping called? 2) This refers to a treelike diagram that shows the evolutionary relationships of species based on derived characters. 3) In cladistics, this refers to a characteristic that is not found in the common ancestor of a group of organisms being studied. 4) Vertebrate skeletons perform the same basic function, are made up of the same materials and are composed of the same parts. This kind of skeletal organization is believed to be inherited from and originated by a common vertebrate ancestor. What are characteristics such as the organization of the vertebrate skeleton called? 1 5) These are biological molecules, such as DNA or a protein, whose rate of evolution can be…arrow_forwardDevelop a taxonmic key for the following: cat, dog, buffalo, goat, parrot.arrow_forward
- What's Your Name In 2017, an Iranian Canadian scientist named Vazrick Nazari discovered a new moth species of the genus Neopalpa from Southern California and Northern Mexico. This distinctly "blonde-crowned "moth had been named after America's 45th president, Donald Trump. Try recalling your BIO 14, what would be the full scientific name of this moth? Write your answer on the space provided below: Genus Specific epithet Genus Author A species of horse fly from the genus Scaptia was discovered in 1981 in Atherton Tablelands in northeast Queensland, Australia. It was officially described and named only in 2011. This fly with a "golden butt" is named after American recording artist and actress Beyoncé. What would be the full scientific name of this fly? Write your answer on the space provided below: Specific epithet Year Author Yeararrow_forwardThe image shows two species of lizards. Phrynosoma cornutum (left) is found in North America and Moloch horridus (right) is found in Australia. These species are strikingly similar both in appearance and in behaviour, yet they are very distantly related. M. horridus is more closely related to chameleons than to P. cornutum while P. cornutum is more closely related to iguanas than to M. horridus. Both species live in similar environment (deserts) and have the same diet (ants). Which phenomenon most likely account for their similarities? - In lecture we discussed eight (8) lines of evidence that Darwin used to lay out his argument for the fact of evolution in his book On the Origin of Species (1859). Using your materials from lecture and the last chapter of the "Origin" that we read for section, 1) rank order these lines of evidence based on what you find the most to the least compelling. 2) Be sure to describe each of these lines of evidence and 3) discuss how they are, or not, relevant in the early 21st century. (From old pset1) Evidence Variation in domesticated species and breeding (artificial selection) Hierarchical classification (groups nested within groups) "Unity of type" - modification of the same basic structure (homology) Evident "fit" of organisms to environments (but imperfections) (adaptation) Structures without apparent function (vestigial structures) Similarity of organisms in early phases of development (embryology) Order in diversity through time in the fossil record (paleontology) Order in…arrow_forwardThere are two main groups of bats: Smaller “microbats” navigate by using sonar, and larger “megabats” rely on vision. Mammalogists once though that both kinds of bats evolve from insectivorous mammals. But similarities between the visual systems of megabats and primates have led some researchers to think that megabats may have evolve from primates, perhaps lemurs. What results would support the hypothesis that the two groups of bats have a common origin? Separate origins?arrow_forwardHelp me pleasearrow_forward
- For each of the following sets of traits and descriptors, give the name of the most specific Primate taxon that possesses ALL of the given features. In other words, don't report a suborder or superfamily name if a family or even a genus is sufficient to include all primates sharing the three sets of traits. In each case, you will need to be no more specific than the taxa I have asked you to know for the final exam. 1) suspensory anatomy (full 360° rotation in shoulder) Y-5 molar pattern fist walking partial post-orbital closure dry nose: nostrils with internal moist membranes all members are nocturnal 2) 3) fused frontal bone no external tail IMI less than 100 4) brachiator anatomy bribban. 2:1:2:3 dental formula ischial callositiesarrow_forwardReferring to the tree below, which is an accurate statement about relationships?
