Characteristic of water that allows it to dissolve ionic solids has to be explained.
Concept introduction:
- In a solution, the dissolved substance is called the solute. The dissolving substance is called the solvent.
- Not all liquids are miscible.
- A solute may not be infinitely soluble in a particular solvent. When no more of the solute will dissolve, the solution is said to be saturated.
- The amount of solute that can be dissolved in a given amount of liquid is referred to as the solubility of the solute in the solvent.
