A sound wave in air has a frequency of 409 Hz. What is its wavelength?
Calculate the wavelength for a sound wave with a frequency of 454 Hz?
In our model of sound we found (in a homework assignment) that the
maximum molecular displacement sm, for sound in air, is much smaller than the
distance between neighboring air molecules. From this fact we learn .. (circle the
best answer)
(a) ... that the validity of the model has broken down.
(b) ... that sm describes the average position of very many molecules and is mean-
ingful even when this is smaller than the microscopic scale of the material.
(c) ... that apparently what matters is the tiny fraction of molecules that happen to
be very close to others.
(d) ... that some of what gets taught in 2214 is a gross oversimplification and falls
apart under more careful scrutiny.
The figure has a moving sound source S, that is emitting a frequency. There are 4 stationary sound detectors. I want to rank the detectors according to the frequency of the sound they detect from S from greatest to first. and Why?
I got 3,1,4,2.. My reason being that has it travels forward the frequency is at its highest, nearest and in front of it, then fades out. But I'm not sure I'm correct. Could you explain this to me?
Thank you.

- The flute is typically about 26 inches long and as we have seen this week it is an open tube at both ends. There are holes which are closed or opened by fingering and valves that change its effective length, and the pattern and mechanisms to do this set various designs of flutes played now and in the past. Assume that the velocity of sound in warm moist air is 340 m/s. 1. Show that the resonant frequency of the flute without any open holes is close to middle C. Middle C is sometimes called "C4" and its frequency on the evenly tempered scale where A is 440 Hz is 261 Hz.arrow_forwardThe flute is typically about 26 inches long and as we have seen this week it is an open tube at both ends. Middle C is sometimes called "C4" and its frequency on the evenly tempered scale where A is 440 Hz is 261 Hz. 2. A flute finger hole is opened to force a node close to the point under the hole (actually, a little farther out). This has the effect of shortening the tube. Why does this increase the frequency? About where would the hole be to make the sound of A4, the standard reference frequency of modern music? 3. Tracey decided that she needed a new vehicle, as her old one was beginning to run poorly and make extremely loud noises while the engine ran. When she got her new vehicle, she measured the relative sound intensities of the vehicles running and found that her old vehicle was 23 times as intense as the sound of her new vehicle. If the decibel level of her new car is 79 d B, what is the decibel level of the old car? Show your full solution method on your work sheet.
