Question
Chapter 55.1, Problem 3R
Summary Introduction
To review:
Whether the interactions between lionfishes and their fish prey in the Atlantic Ocean resulted in any evolutionary change.
Introduction:
The coral reef is invaded by the two species of beautiful but highly destructive lionfishes. Lionfishes are the aquarium fishes and are increasing at a very high number. The increase in number has led to the decline of the native fishes of that ocean. They are so efficient in predating as they are capable of tolerating a variety of tropical and subtropical temperatures and salinities.

- A defence mechanism is how the sea cucumber fires its internal organs at attackers. How would this defence mechanism have evolved over time due to pressure from predation and/or competition? When researchers moved guppies from populations preyed on by cichlids to a habitat with killifish, the life histories of the transplanted guppies evolved. They came to resemble those of guppy populations preyed on by killifish. Males became gaudier; some scales formed larger, more colorful spots. How might a decrease in predation pressure on sexually mature fish allow this change?arrow_forwardSnapping shrimp have evolved very rapid movements in the structures they use to capture prey. However, several populations of garter snakes have undergone one or a few mutations that enablethem to tolerate the toxin, and these snakes eat the newts with no ill effects. How has natural selection affected this predator–prey relationship? Based on what you have learned about evolutionary arms races, predict what may happen to the newts and the poison-resistant garter snakes over time.arrow_forward
