Chapter 50.4, Problem 1CS
Summary Introduction
To propose: A revised model to depict the effect on Ca2+ homeostasis if bone cells are unable to respond to PTH (parathyroid hormone).
Introduction: Skin cells in the mammals that are receiving regular exposure to sunlight produces vitamin D from the precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol. Blood Ca2+ concentration does not decrease due to the secretion of parathyroid hormone. Bone cells release extra Ca2+ from the bones thereby increasing the concentration of calcium in the blood.

Role play the following scenarios demonstrating empathy:
A: A patient has been diagnosed with cancer and the prognosis looks very poor. You are left alone with the patient and his spouse. Demonstrate empathy as you interact with the patient and his family.
B: Your coworker has just been told that she has had her hours cut and she is very angry. Respond with empathy.

Short Answer – Choose 3 questions to answer
1. Which would you expect to have a faster effect: a steroid hormone or a peptide
hormone? Explain your answer.
2. Give an example of a hormone that is controlled by a negative feedback loop.
Explain what the hormone regulates and what controls the release and inhibition of
the hormone.
3. The nervous system and the endocrine system are, of course, different but they
have many features in common. List five things that the endocrine system and the
nervous system have in common.
4. List 5 factors that can affect red blood cell production and/or the ability of red
blood cells
to carry oxygen?
5. Blood pressure is regulated by baroreceptors, which are located in the aorta and
the carotid arteries. In response to signals from these receptors, the cardiac control
center of the medulla will send signals to reduce the force of ventricular contractions.
Given this sort of control, why do people develop high blood pressure?
Topic: Endocrine Physiology
1. Give 3 examples of lipid-soluble hormones and water-soluble hormones
2. What three types of signals control hormone secretion

- Intro to Neuro Question: Steroid hormones... Group of answer choices Are synthesized from cholesterol Play a major role in sexual development Penetrate cell membranes All of the above Both A and B Is my reasoning correct? Steroid hormones: Are synthesized from cholesterol: True. Steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol. Play a major role in sexual development: True. Steroid hormones include sex hormones like testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, which are crucial for sexual development and reproductive functions. Penetrate cell membranes: True. Steroid hormones are lipophilic and can easily diffuse through the lipid bilayer of cell membranes to act on intracellular receptors.
