Chapter 5, Problem 72AP
A black aluminum glider floats on a film of air above a level aluminum air track. Aluminum feels essentially no force in a magnetic field, and air resistance is negligible. A strong magnet is attached to the top of the glider, forming a total mass of 240 g. A piece of scrap iron attached to one end stop on the track attracts the magnet with a force of 0.823 N when the iron and the magnet are separated by 2.50 cm. (a) Find the acceleration of the glider at this instant. (b) The scrap iron is now attached to another green glider, forming total mass 120 g. Find the acceleration of each glider when the gliders are simultaneously released at 2.50-cm separation.

A stubborn dog is being walked on a leash by its owner. At one point, the dog encounters an interesting scent at some spot on the ground and wants to explore it in detail, but the owner gets impatient and pulls on the leash with force F ⃗ = (98.0i ^ + 132.0j ^ + 32.0k ^ )N along the leash. (a) What is the magnitude of the pulling force? (b) What angle does the leash make with the vertical?
The figure shows a container of mass m1 = 3.9 kg connected to a block of mass m2 by a cord looped around a frictionless pulley.
A speedboat with a mass of 545 kg545 kg (including the driver) is tethered to a fixed buoy by a strong 32.7 m32.7 m cable. The boat's owner loves high speed, but does not really want to go anywhere. So the owner revs up the boat's engine, makes a lot of noise, and runs the boat in circles around the buoy with the cable supplying all the necessary centripetal force. When the tension of the cable is steady at 13700 N,13700 N, with what force is the boat's engine pushing the boat? Different physics textbooks treat drag force somewhat differently and use different formulas. For the present purpose, take the water's drag force on the boat to be (450 kg/m)×?2,(450 kg/m)×v2, where ?v denotes the boat's speed. Ignore any drag force on the cable.
