Case summary:
Company RM runs a boat manufacturing business, which must differentiate its business strategy from other companies. With constant innovation and seeking inputs from customers, dealers and consultants in the design stage help the firm to successfully produce unique products.
The development phase of the product is speeded up by instantly taking the product from the design stage to the styling studio. Having released products such as water-skier, 20-foot inboard–outboard performance boat, and 52-foot sports yacht, the production personnel are put under pressure to respond to the new product. The lifecycle time is 3 years.
The firm found that the product development part can be accelerated by involving suppliers in the design phase. The CAD provides product specification after the product had completed the concept and styling phase.
A plug is formed by foam-based carving, which is driven by the specifications from the CAD system. Permanent molds are made for the new design, which takes about 4 to 8 weeks. Boats are made by joining the molds.
