To define:
The cancer patient has to take filgrastim (Neupogen) after carmustine and radiation therapy to treat the brain tumor. Filgrastim (Neupogen) comes in a 300-mcg/mL vial and the standard dose of filgrastim is 5 mcg/kg. How many milliliters of filgrastim will be given to the patient (weighs 132 pounds)?
Concept introduction:
Filgrastim is a synthetic granulocyte colony stimulating factor and that helps to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of progenitor cells of granulocytes. Granulocytes act against bacterial and fungal infections. Filgrastim has significant drug interactions with myelosuppressive antineoplastic drugs. Therefore, filgrastim should not be given with myelosuppressive antineoplastic drugs during cancer treatment. Filgrastim is generally given to the cancer patient before the development of infection. Filgrastim is not administered within 24 hours after or before myelosuppressive antineoplastic drugs.
