A steel bar 20 mm square in section is subjected to an axial compressive load of 60 kN.
Find the percentage change in volume if the bar is 500 mm long. What are the equal
stresses that must be applied to the sides of the bar if the volumetric change is to be zero? E
= 200GPA and v=0.3.
Problem 4.30
While the stiffness of an elastic cord can be quite constant (i.e., the force versus displace-
ment curve is a straight line) over a large range of stretch, as a bungee cord is stretched,
it softens; that is, the cord tends to get less stiff as it gets longer. Assuming a soften-
ing force-displacement relation of the form k8 - B83, where 8 (measured in ft) is the
displacement of the cord from its unstretched length, considering a bungee cord whose
unstretched length is 150 ft, and letting k = 2.58 lb/ft, determine the value of the con-
stant B such that a bungee jumper weighing 170 lb and starting from rest gets to the
bottom of a 400 ft tower with zero speed.
Question 4: A beam of the cross section shown is made of a steel that is assumed to be elastoplastic with E=29×10°
psi and oy = 42 ksi. A bending couple is applied to the beam about the z axis, causing plastic zones 2 in. thick to develop
at the top and bottom of the beam. After the couple has been removed, determine (a) the residual stress at y=2 in., (b)
the points where the residual stress is zero, (c) the radius of curvature corresponding to the permanent deformation of
the beam.
