Chapter 46, Problem 2IQ
Summary Introduction
To list: The three mechanisms that may help to ensure that the gamete release is synchronized when fertilization is external.
Introduction: Fertilization is the process of the union of male and female sex cells to form a zygote that grows into an individual. There are two mechanisms of fertilization, namely the external and internal mechanisms. External fertilization refers to the fertilization of eggs that occurs outside the body and mostly in water. Internal fertilization is the fertilization of eggs in the female reproductive tract.

a. Only the inner cell mass cells in a blastocyst are pluripotent.
b. The trophoblast has an important role in maintaining the pregnancy, as it prevents the endometrium from shedding.
c. As hCG takes over maintaining the endometrium immediately after implantation, the corpus luteum degenerates into the corpus albican.
d. All 16 cells in a morula are truly totipotent, meaning that they can become any cells in the human body.
