Consider the equation of the parabola in standard form is y=ax2+bx+c where a≠0 .
Since, the parabola passes through the points (1,−2),(2,−4) and (3,−4) . Therefore, the three points (1,−2),(2,−4) and (3,−4) will satisfy the parabola y=ax2+bx+c where a≠0 .
Satisfying the points (1,−2),(2,−4) and (3,−4) in the parabola y=ax2+bx+c .
y=ax2+bx+c....(1)−2=a(1)2+b(1)+c....(Satisfy point (1,−2) in (1))−2=a+b+c....(2)−4=a(2)2+b(2)+c....(Satisfy point (2,−4) in (1))−4=4a+2b+c....(3)−4=a(3)2+b(3)+c....(Satisfy point (3,−4) in (1))−4=9a+3b+c−4=3(3a+b)+c....(4)
Eliminate (c) from (2) and (3) gives 3a+b=−2 .
Substitute 3a+b=−2 in (4) gives, c=2 .
Substitute c=2 in (2) and (3) and simplifying gives,
a+b=−42a+b=−3}....(5)
Solving the set of equations (5) simultaneously gives, a=1 and b=−5 .
Now, plugging the parameters a=−1, b=−5 and c=2 in standard form of parabola (1) gives the required equation of parabola in standard form y=−x2−5x+2 .
