Chapter 42, Problem 9TYU
Summary Introduction

To review:

The relation between structure and function with respect to:

a). Absorptive sections of digestive tract.

b). Capillaries.

c). Beaks of Galapagos finches.

d). Fish gills.

Introduction:

The digestive system is made of gastrointestinal tract along with many accessory organs that help in digestion. Capillaries are defined as fine branches of blood vessels that develop a network between the venules and arterioles. Galapagos finches are birds present on Galapagos Island that show variation in their beaks size and shape. Fish gills are tissues, found in fishes for the exchange of gases.

Bony Fish Describe the colors and textures of the dissected perch (bony fish), their functions, and the ways in which the internal anatomy of the perch is similar to and differs from that of the shark. How does the anatomy of the digestive system influence the food preference of the perch, compared to that of the shark? Compare the two organisms in their buoyancy mechanisms, and the means of oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange. What is the ecology of the perch (including a preference for fresh or saltwater, food preference (are all herbivores? Carnivores?)) What economic importance do fish have?
Compare the following animals in terms of their digestive tracts (centerpoint only needed in the graph (similarities))
Crayfish have gills but open circulatory systems, whereas squid have gills but closed systems. What does this difference tell you about each animal's average metabolic needs? What other large surface do squid use for gas exchange, and what internal structure in the squid serves as defense? Explain everything in three paragraphs.
