Chapter 4, Problem 111P
The wheeled cart shown rolls with negligible resistance. The cart is to accelerate to the right at a constant rate of 2.5m/s2. This is to be accomplished by “programming” the water jet speed, V(t), that hits the cart. The jet area remains constant at 50 mm2. Find the initial jet speed, and the jet speed and cart speeds after 2.5 s and 5 s. Theoretically, what happens to the value of (V – U) over time?

A pump discharges a liquid into a drum at the rate of 0.032 m3/s. The drum, 1.5m in diameter and 4.2m in length, can hold 3000kg of the liquid. Find the density of the liquid and the mass flow rate of the liquid handled by the pump.
A cargo ship has tanks for carrying fuel oil. The oil is measured in barrels, while the tank dimensions are in meters, 1m x 5m x 15m. How many barrels does the tank hold? How many gallons? (42 gal = 1 barrel)
Sparky needs to design a device that accelerates air in order to keep some the inflatable eagle fully inflated for some university events. The velocity through the device (V) is linear (ax + b, where a and b are constants). Since the inflatable is used on top of the ski/tubing run at Snowflex the wind velocity entering the device at x1 of 0 (V1) is 10 m/sec. Sparky needs the velocity at the exit of the 1 m-long (x2) device to be 25 m/sec (V2). For force calculations Sparky needs to know the local acceleration, convective acceleration, and total acceleration at the device inlet (x1 = 0 m) and exit (x2 = 1 m). What are these values?
In this question, assume the "additional displacement" is in the positive u direction.
A mass weighing 16 lbs stretches a spring 8 inches. The mass is in a medium that exerts a viscous resistance
of 1 lbs when the mass has a velocity of 2 ft/sec.
Suppose the object is displaced an additional 5 inches and released.
Find an equation for the object's displacement, u(t), in feet after t seconds.
