Ski jumping in Vancouver The 2010 Olympic ski jumping competition was held at Whistler Mountain near Vancouver During a jump, a skier starts near the top of the in-run, the part down which the skier glides at increasing speed before the jump The Whistler in-run is 116 m long and for the first part is tilted down at about 35° below the horizontal. There is then a curve that transitions into a takeoff ramp, which is tilted 11° below the horizontal. The skier flies off this ramp at high speed body tilted forward and skis separated (Figure 4.15). This position exposes a large surface area to the air, which creates lift, extends the time of the jump, and allows the jumper to travel farther In addition, the skier pushes off the exit ramp of the in-run to get a vertical component of velocity when leaving the ramp. The skier lands 125 m or more from the end of the in-run The landing surface has a complex shape and is tilted down at about
Which answers below are closest to the magnitude of the skier's acceleration while moving down the idealized in-run and to the skier's speed when leaving its end?

- A roller coaster moves 200 ft horizontally and then rises 135 ft at an angle of 30.0 above the horizontal. Next, it travels 135 ft at an angle of 40.0 below the horizontal. Use graphical techniques to find the roller coaster's displacement from its starting point to the end of this movement.arrow_forwardA hockey puck struck by a hockey stick is given an initial speed v0 in the positive x-direction. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ice and the puck is k. (a) Obtain an expression for the acceleration of the puck. (b) Use the result of part (a) to obtain an expression for the distance d the puck slides. The answer should be in terms of the variables v0, k, and g only.arrow_forwardA basketball player dribbles the ball while running at a constant speed straight across the court. Think about the velocity and acceleration of the ball and then sketch a motion diagram for the ball. Explain how you arrived at your sketch.arrow_forward
- A boy throws a stone horizontally from the top of a cliff of height h toward the ocean below. The stone strikes the ocean at distance d from the base of the cliff. In terms of h, d, and g, find expressions for (a) the time t at which the stone lands in the ocean, (b) the initial speed of the stone, (c) the speed of the stone immediately before it reaches the ocean, and (d) the direction of the stones velocity immediately before it reaches the ocean.arrow_forward. The roller coaster in Figure 1.39 starts at the top of a straight track that is inclined 30° with the horizontal. This causes it to accelerate at a rate of 4.9 m/s2 (1/2 g).
