Question
Chapter 36, Problem 5WIO
Summary Introduction
To describe:
The system that the wasp used to find its nest.
Concept introduction:
Environmental features play an important role in determining and influencing the behavior of animals. For some animals the environmental features may serve as landmarks. These landmarks sometimes in some cases serve as a help for finding the way for their home which is exactly the same case as in case of female digger wasps.

Some types of mosquitoes are known to use landmarks as a mechanism to find the nesting sites. If a researcher were to move the landmark away from the nest (but the nurse remains on moved in the same location), with the mosquitoes still be able to find the nesting site?

- As depicted in the diagram, honeybees communicate the location of flower patches to members of their hives with waggle dances that give information about the direction and distance to the flowers. Which of the following statements about how honeybees communicate the position of flower patches is most consistent with the model? a. The total area covered by any waggle dance leads bees to the target flowers. b. The farther the target flowers from the hive, the longer the waggle phase. c. The angle of the waggle phase relative to the vertical plane indicates the position of the target flowers relative to another beehive. d.The number of repetitions of the waggle dance indicates the quality of the pollen source.arrow_forwardYou are studying the effect that the commonly used agricultural pesticide "Pestkill" that has been found in bodies of water has on the survival rate of eggs of dragonflies. - What does this figure from the bee paper show? a) Different bees are active at different times of the day b) The bees in the colonies observed were active almost exclusively during the hours of 8 am-midnight c) the bees can detect UV light, allowing them to center their activity at certain times of day d) Bees are more active at dawn and dusk than the other times of dayarrow_forwardTo conduct their experiment, the researchers collected L. peronii eggs from a natural stream. After the eggs had hatched, tadpoles were raised in artificially constructed 2 L containers in a laboratory. All containers were filled with 1 L of filtered tap water, and the water was changed every other day. Thirteen tadpoles were placed in each container, and the tadpoles were exposed to a 12-hour light: 12-hour dark photoperiod. All tadpoles were fed thawed spinach daily. The researchers randomly placed the tadpoles into containers exposed to one of four treatments, with nine replicates of each treatment, as follows: Low UVBR (<6.0 kJ/m2), low temperature (15OC) Low UVBR (<6.0 kJ/m2), high temperature (26OC) High UVBR (>70.0 kJ/m2), low temperature (15OC) High UVBR (>70.0 kJ/m2), high temperature (26OC) The researchers recorded the number of tadpoles still alive out of the original 13 in a container (percent survival) at different time periods. Their results at Week 4,…arrow_forwardYou are studying the effect that the commonly used agricultural pesticide "Pestkill" that has been found in bodies of water has on the survival rate of eggs of dragonflies. - If an egg rolls out of the nest, a mother goose will retrieve it by nudging it with her beak and head. If researchers remove the egg or substitute a ball during this process, the goose continues to bob her beak and head while she moves back to the nest. For each yeast cell type, a group of 1000 cells were given the Wild Type-created pheromone. Then, another group of 1000 cells were given the Variant 1-created pheromone, and then another group of 1000 cells were given Variant 2-created pheromone. The same concentration of pheromone was given to each group. After 48 hours, the cells were observed. Cells that had differentiated by showing mating structures were counted.
