Chapter 32, Problem 1RQ
How is the camshaft driven by the crankshaft?
Expert Solution & Answer
To determine
Identify how the camshaft is driven by the crankshaft.
Explanation of Solution
In an engine, the opening and closing of the valves are timed and the actuating mechanism for the fuel pumps and injectors are controlled by the camshaft. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft through a belt or chain drive. In a four stroke engine, the speed of the camshaft is half of the crankshaft and for a two stroke engine; the speed is the same for both.
