The closely spaced levels in Fig 27-29 represent the transitions (or)jumps correspond to the various observed spectral lines. The lines corresponds to the transitions or jumps that bring energy from one energy level to an other energy level.

The spacing between energy levels become very closely packed as shown in Fig 27-24, so the light absorbed or emitted in transitions between levels are higher (or)even higher. When these transition occur, they emit radiation, due to the emitted radiation, the closely spaced spectral lines are created.
