Chapter 25.1, Problem 2R
Summary Introduction

To review:

An organismal tree, in which gene x has undergone a lateral transfer event and draw the phylogenetic tree as per the respective expectations based on the given conditions.

Given:

An organismal tree, in which gene x has undergone a lateral transfer event is shown in Figure 1 given below.

Life: The Science of Biology, Chapter 25.1, Problem 2R

Figure 1: An organismal tree

Introduction:

A phylogenetic tree is the diagrammatic representation of evolutionary relationships among organisms. It can be drawn in various styles. All the species including A, B, C, and D have a common origin as per their representation in the phylogenetic tree. Later on, each species evolved in some way or the other. Species B and C are more closely related to each other in comparison to other species.

When constructing a phylogenetic tree, what problem would horizontal gene transfer pose?
