Amino acids are compounds that have an amine group and a carboxylic acid group in it.  These compounds may have a side chain also.  The side chains may be acidic or basic depending upon the functional groups present in it.  Simply to say if carboxylic acid is present in the side chain then the side chain is said to be acidic and if it has amine then it is said to be basic side chain.
