Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 74GP

The location of where red image is formed: 79.4cm

The location of where yellow image is formed: 75.5cm

Explanation of Solution

Given:

A Lucite Planoconvex lens has one flat surface and other has R=18.4cm .

Distance of object is 66.0cm

The index of refraction of the glass is 1.5106 for red light and 1.5226 for yellow light.

Formula used:

It is known that

  1do + 1di = 1f

Where,

  f is a focal length

  do is distance from the source to lens

  di is distance from the screen to the lens

Calculation:

First calculate the focal lengths of lens for the two colors:

  1fred=(nred1)(1R1+1R2)

  =(1.51061)((118.4cm)+(1))

  fred=36.04cm

  1fyellow=(nyellow1)(1R1+1R2)

  =(1.5226-1)((118.4cm)+(1))

  fyellow=35.21cm

Now calculate the image distances by using the formula:

  1do + 1di(red) = 1fred

  166.0cm + 1di(red) = 136.04cm

  di(red)=79.4cm

  166.0cm + 1di(yellow) = 135.21cm

  di(yellow)=75.5cm

Conclusion:

The location where red and yellow images formed are 79.4cm and 75.5cm .
