Why there is greater depth of field, and sharper image, when the camera lens is “stopped down” to a larger f-number
Answer to Problem 2Q
Solution:
Stopping down means to reduce the opening and having more parallel light rays to produce smaller circles of confusion and which means that a greater range of object distances will be more sharply focused.
Explanation of Solution
The stopping down to a larger f-number of the lens means that, smaller lens openings and to have and only light rays coming through the central part of the lens are accepted. These rays are more nearly parallel than the case of a smaller f-number. The circles of confusion made by these rays are smaller which means focusing more sharply over a greater range of object distances.
