Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Shine-Dalgarno sequences differ in different genes. It includes GAGGGG that serves as a code for Glu-Gly. Explain if this sequence of Glu-Gly cannot occur in a protein unless it is read as a Shine-Dalgarno sequence.
Concept introduction:
The genetic stability is increased by the genetic code. The genetic code is also liable to minimize the point mutations. The point mutations could affect the functions of the protein. Any mutation in the genetic code could lead to a change in the sequence of amino acid in the protein. This sometimes results in serious health complications like sickle cell anemia. Shine-Dalgarno sequence is referred to as a site where ribosomes bind and are observed in prokaryotic mRNA. This sequence is present 8 bases upstream of the start codon. AUG is the start codon and during the translation process, it adds N-formylmethionine to the start.
