Concept explainers
(a) Interpretation:
The genetic code has been evolved to maximize the genetic stability. This is done by minimizing the effect on protein function of most substitution mutation. Six arginine codons are implemented to test this idea. Consider all the substitutions that have an effect on all the six arginine codons. The total number of possible mutations should be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Codon is defined as the sequence of three deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) nucleotides which corresponds with a particular amino acid.
A stop codon is a codon that does not code for any amino acid and is mainly responsible for stopping the transcription process.
(b) Interpretation:
The number of mutations that are silent in the way that the mutant codon is changed to another Arg codon should be determined.

(c) Interpretation:
The number of mutations that are conservative in the way that Arg codon is changed to Lys codon should be determined.
