Chapter 23, Problem 4CQ
Figure 23-29 shows a vertical iron rod with a wire coil of many turns wrapped around its base. A metal ring slides over the rod and rests on the wire coil. Initially the switch connecting the coil to a battery is open, but when it is closed, the ring flies into the air. Explain why this happens.

A conducting bar of mass m 1kg and length /= 1m is in contact with a thin
conducting circular ring as shown in the figure. The bar rotates about the pivot
point o which is also the center of the ring. The ring and the bar are connected
by a resistor R 10. A uniform magne tic field B 17 is applied perpendicular
to the rotating plane of the bar and the ring. The bar is released to rotate at t =
0 after reaching initial angular speed w, = 100rad/s. Find the angular speed w
of the rod att = 3s. (Assume that there is a good electrical contact between bar
and the ring and ignore friction forces).

The coil is attached to a ballistic galvanometer, a device that measures the total charge that passes through it. - The immediate cause of many deaths is ventricular fibrillation, an uncoordinated quivering of the heart, as opposed to proper beating. An electric shock to the chest can cause momentary paralysis of the heart muscle, after which the heart will sometimes start organized beating again. A defibrillator is a device that applies a strong electric shock to the chest over a time of a few milliseconds. The device contains a capacitor of a few microfarads, charged to several thousand volts. Electrodes called paddles, about 8 cm across and coated with conducting paste, are held against the chest on both sides of the heart. Their handles are insulated to prevent injury to the operator, who calls Clear! and pushes a button on one paddle to discharge the capacitor through the patient's chest Assume an energy of 3.00 102 W s is to be delivered from a 30.0-F capacitor.
