Chapter 23, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction

To explain: The mechanism by which glowing in the dark could benefit the mushroom.

Concept introduction: Mushrooms are the fruiting body of club fungi meant for their sexual reproduction. They produce sexual spores in this special structure as seeds inside a fruit. Other than just a fruiting body, some mushrooms are found to have some unusual traits that make them rare. Some scientists have discovered mushrooms with bioluminescent power from Brazil and Vietnam. The phenomenon by which mushrooms emit light is called bioluminescence. It is an enzyme-dependent process in which a light emitting compound namely luciferin undergoes oxidation with the help of an enzyme called luciferase, which results in the emission of light.

Summary Introduction

To explain: What might be the reason why species with unusual trait live in the same region.

You have been asked to consult for a biotech company that is seeking to understand why some fungi can live in very extreme environments, such as the high temperatures inside naturally occurring hot springs. The company has isolated two different fungal species, F. cattoriae and W. gravinius, both of which can grow at temperatures exceeding 95°C. The company has determined the following things about these fungal species (see attached image) By sequencing and examining their genomes, the biotech company hopes to understand why these species can live in extreme environments. However, the company only has the resources to sequence one genome, and would like your input as to which species should be sequenced and whether you believe a shotgun strategy will work in this case.
Stinkhorn mushrooms embed their spores in a foul-smelling material that is attractive to flies. Explain why this occurs and where else this is observed (what is this referred to in other groups)?
