Summary Introduction

Mercury is present as elemental mercury in the atmosphere and can enter into aquatic environments as mercuric ions. Methylmercury and dimethylmercury are extremely toxic forms of mercury and can accumulate in muscles tissue of fish causing a problem of biomagnification. Gram positive and gram negative bacteria can convert toxic forms of mercury to non toxic forms.
