Summary Introduction

To determine: The reason for tonic contraction in some sphincters of the digestive system.

Introduction: Majority of the gastrointestinal tract is made up of continuous smooth muscles. These muscles have some group of cells which are connected electrically with the help of gap junctions. These cells create contracting segments. Different types of contractions can be seen in different regions of the tract. The contractions which sustain for a few minutes or several hours are known as tonic contractions.

why is there a need for sphincters in the stomach? what will happen otherwise?
How does gastrointestinal tract evade dehydration? 1) Alternating wave-like contraction and relaxatio of the oral (mouth) muscles reabsorbs water which will be transported to the urinary system 2) water is an important digestive enzyme in the stomach. 3) Normal peristaltic movements in the large intestine ensure reabsorption of water that will be delivered to the circulatory system. 4) the water we drink will be mostly absord by the blood vessels attached to the esophagus and stomach.
