Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The greenhouse gases are to be identified, out of the given options.
Concept introduction:
The greenhouse effect is a process in which heat is trapped by the atmospheric gases present near the surface of the earth. The greenhouse has a roof of glass through which visible sunlight is transmitted and some of the outgoing infrared radiations are absorbed by the glass roof and heat is trapped.
Greenhouse gases are associated with the greenhouse effect. These types of gases absorb infrared radiation. These gases must be IR active for which they must undergo a change in dipole moment.
Common examples of green house gases are carbon dioxide and

- Loss of atmospheric ozone has led to an ozone “hole” overAntarctica. The process occurs in part by three consecutive reac-tions: (1) Chlorine atoms react with ozone (O₃) to form chlorinemonoxide and molecular oxygen. (2) Chlorine monoxide forms ClOOCl. - You are working with an artist who has been commissionedto make a sculpture for a big city in the eastern UnitedStates. The artist is wondering what material to use to makeher sculpture because she has heard that acid rain in theeastern United States might destroy it over time. You takesamples of granite, marble, bronze, and other materials, and place them outdoors for a long time in the big city. You periodically examine the appearance and measure the mass of the samples.
