Answer to Problem 8RAT

The correct option for the statement “Is the synthesis of ozone, O3, from oxygen, O2, an example of an exothermic or endothermic reaction“ is option (d).

Explanation of Solution

The process of the conversion of reactant species into the product species is called a chemical reaction. There are two main types of chemical reactions based on the exchange of energy.

1) The chemical reaction where the energy gets absorbed in the system from the external area or the surrounding is the endothermic type of reaction.

2) The chemical reaction where the energy gets released towards the surrounding from the area of interest or the system is the exothermic type of reaction.

The synthesis of ozone from oxygen is taken place due to the presence of highly energized photons of the ultraviolet region. The oxygen molecule thus absorbs energy from ultraviolet light to produce the ozone molecule.

Therefore, the process is endothermic as it absorbs energy from ultraviolet light.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the correct option is option (d).
