Chapter 20, Problem 19RQ

What is always increasing?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

What is always increasing in the universe.

Answer to Problem 19RQ

In the universe, entropy of the system and surrounding is always increasing.

Explanation of Solution

The energy has a very high tendency to spread from the area of the universe having high concentration to the area of the universe having low concentration. Energy can simply flow from the thermodynamic system to the surrounding in the universe.

This flow of energy does not require any external influence or factors and thus it is termed as entropy.

The entropy can be precisely defined as the natural spreading of a different form of energy.

Thus, entropy is always flowing by the flow of energy.

Conclusion:

Therefore, in the universe, entropy of the system and surrounding is always increasing.
