Answer to Problem 12TE

The trend based on the sizes of these atoms in the periodic table is that, across the period, the bond strength increases of a covalent bond.

Explanation of Solution

The amount of energy required in a chemical reaction to break a bond is termed as bond energy. The bond energy is the amount of energy used to break the bond of the reactant species. The same amount of energy is released if the same bond is formed again.

The electronegativity of an atom plays an important factor in the bond strength of the bonds between two atoms.

While moving across the period in a periodic table, the electronegativity of an atom increases.

It is given that the bond energy increases from CN to CO to CF. As the electronegativity of a particular atom increases, the bond strength of a covalent bond between two atoms goes on increasing.

The higher the bond strength of a covalent bond, the more energy is required to break the bond between two atoms having a covalent bond.

Thus, across the period, the bond strength increases.

Conclusion:

Therefore, across the period, the bond strength of a covalent bond increases.
